"Options" Window

The Options window is brought up with the "Tools > Options" menu item or the F8 key, and allows you to change the program settings. Depending on how many fonts you have installed on your system, the Options window may take a few seconds to appear.

The default values (which can be restored by clicking on the "Reset to Defaults" button) are fairly sensible for most uses. There are two pages of options that can be altered, "General" options and "Styles".

The "General" Tab:

Automatic save

The checkbox turns autosave on or off, and the combo box can be used to select the time interval in minutes between automatic saves. Note that if autosave is on (and for all normal purposes it should be), then any <Untitled> files will cause the Save As box to pop up when an autosave takes place.

Use curly quotes

This option changes the way single and double quotation marks appear when you type.

If the box is not checked, quotation marks will appear in their normal, neutral guise, i.e. ' or ". If the box is checked you will get curly (open and closed) quotes when you type, i.e. ‘, ’, “, and ”. Which type of quote appears depends where you type it - if the quote is at the start of a word (i.e. a space precedes it) then the open quote (‘ or “) is used. If the quote is typed in the middle of a word or at the end, the close quote (’ or ”) is used. This gives you the correct quotation mark in almost all situations. If you need a different type of quote to the one that appears, you can insert it using the Special Characters function in the Side Panel.

Note: Not all fonts have symbols defined for open and close quotes. "Times New Roman" and "Courier New" (two of the most useful fonts for writing purposes) do, but if you are using a different font, you should check these symbols to see if they are appear as you expect them to.

Note: If you search for a text containing a quotation mark, you must make sure you use the correct quotes (curly or neutral) as appropriate. For example, searching for "cont'd" will not find the text "cont’d".

Fonts

The "Default font for RTF files" determines the font and font size to start with when you create a new file. It will not affect existing files.

The "Default font for all other files" determines the font and font size for any files you may open which are not in Rich Text Format. All currently open files which are not RTF will switch to this new font. Note that the font will not be saved with the file, it is just the font RoughDraft will use to display the file.

The "Font for Headers and Footers" tells RoughDraft what font and font size to use for the title and page numbers when printing.

Dictionary for spellchecking

This determines whether British or American spelling will be used during a spellcheck.

The "Styles" Tab

This page shows options for each of the five styles. The text box on the left allows you to give a name for the style which will appear in the Text menu. Below this there is a Font... button which brings up a standard window for setting the various text attributes. Finally, to the right of these, is a preview window showing you how the style will look when used.
